James Smith is a Minimal Dub producer and a Techno DJ for Lost Souls and DJ collective ‘The Chelmsford Ravers’. London raised, he was inspired by artists such as Caliber, Klute and Amit, and developed a passion for Drum and bass. After moving to Chelmsford, he left home at just 16 and acquired a taste for socialistic freedom, and his musical career was able to evolve.
James who goes under the alias of Lepsy has had a massive take on electronic dance music. As a driven and perhaps over ambitious teenager, he would attempt DJ sets consisting of 90s house, garage and Rolling Stones records nabbed from his older brothers music collection. With this compulsive determination, he progressed on to what was to become electro / minimal techno at the time with artists like Petter, Damian Lazurus, and Ivan Smagghe really catching his ears. It was only when albums from the likes of James Holden and Four Tet (Kieran Hebden) came along did he start to concede defeat to the 4/4 beat of techno and realise the potential and clarity of what was to come.
2007 saw the arrival of Lepsy into the lost souls community and since then he has been a regular resident at The Lost Souls Techno Club held at public life every Saturday. Also performing at other major nights in renowned clubs such as The Key, Herbal and Scala, he has built a reputable pursuit.
Although admitting to not being the biggest record hunter, he feels it develops a much more colourful set and describes himself as techno for the pop culture (just without the Ray Bans).
Every time you see Lepsy play a set, you’re sure to get an entirely different set from him altogether.
